Conventional Vs Simplistic Poster Design

With numerous films being released weekly marketing teams are constantly battling with one another to gain the attention of the consumer. As the budgets for advertising is often very large the design and create flair posters have is the most important factor of modern marketing. Despite the majority of films having standard conventional, theatrical posters a new form of has began to emerge. Below I have embedded a group of posters which can be sorted into the simplistic category. This particular type follows a strict set of codes which I have outlined below:
  • Often uses a geometrical design involving angles and polygons.
  • Features one of few objects which represent the film or iconic scenes within.
  • Contrasting colours, frequently primary.
  • May involve further consumer engagement for full effect.
Many of the film-loving community have created their own 'simplistic version' of film posters and these are available in abundance to review online. Below is a selection I have selected which I could pull features from and contribute them to my my own work.

Despite their appeal I feel that simplistic theatrical posters have defined cons. As they are unconventional and consumers are not used to them within their environment I feel that they don't attract attention as effectively. However due to their uniqueness once reviewed consumers would be intrigued. Furthermore some find the style lazy or overly simple and prefer a more fuller advertisement possibly including stills from the product or specially created photos for marketing.

Conclusively I feel that this form of poster is a valid option for myself and the idea will be developed further. My next steps in terms of the poster ancillary project is to come up with a few initial designs and gather feedback for them, allowing me to develop them further.
